s80, 2001 transmission problem
Problem.
At about 2.5-3.0K RPM gears slip and stick at the 3d. Warning message Transmission Service Required pops up with Check Engine and yellow triangle signs. After i park the car for 5-10 min the transmission is back to normal, but the message and sings stay lit.
I've sent my car to Sandy Lane about 4 weeks ago first time and they said that the solenoid software needs an update. For some $250 the did it, but in 2 weeks problem went back. I brought my car back and they just re-set the lights (for free that time) and decided to observe the problem. Tomorrow, again after 2 weeks the problem is back.
I've changed transmission fluid at Mr. Lube about two months ago and after that it's started. When i asked them what fluid they've used it was Dextron. I do not know if this was the right choice.
the car is s80, 2001, 117K miles.

One problem with that transmission is if the technician removes the filter grommet, and replaces it with a new one and does not lubricate the grommet the Trans filter will not set-in easily. Most inexperienced techs will force the filter into place and cause silicone or rubber pieces from the grommet to get sucked into the Trans causing shifting problems in 2 and/or 3 gears damaging the transmission. Inspection of the grommet will confirm.
Or
The shop used the wrong Dexron Trans fluid, most use bulk oil.
Or
The transmission friction material from the clutch plates are used up causing slipping, Black in Trans oil is friction material.
Or
It is time to adjust the valve body.
The best transmission oil for your vehicle is a fully Synthetic Dexron VI only if the transmission is in good shape and the oil was changed on a regular basis. The next best is Dexron VI semi-synthetic.
If Transmission Oil is: Black, do not change oil; Yellow: Burnt smell (dog hair), change until color is red; Dark Red no smell, change; Grey, transmission was submerged in water.

2001 Volvo S80 Transmission Slipping
I recently bought a 2001 Volvo S80 w/out turbo 2.9L Automatic at an auctions Starting from a stopped position the car shifts fine until it hits 3rd gear. If I hold steady on the throttle, the tach will climb from 3k rpms to 4k rpms and them drop back to 3k rpms. This will continue until the car gains more speed. After it hits 50-60 MPH, no slipping occurs unless I approach an incline and the I have to back off the throttle to prevent slipping and creep up this hill. I tool the car to a Volvo mechanic and the said they found gear faults on the transmission error code report and recommend replacing it. Estimate is $2600.00 to replace it with a used transmission with 80k miles. I paid $1700.00 for the car at an auction and overall its in very good condition. Any recommendations regarding the repair or what to do with the car? Thanks! Dennis
