Default Transmission Fluid Question!

Hi

Can anyone tell me the name of the exact transmision fluid the 99 S80 takes, and where can I buy it other then the dealer. Because im thinking of replacing the fluid and the filter at a local non volvo shop.

I just called a dealer about this since called a non-volvo specific shop about having a trans filter replacement/fluid change done and the dealer said Dex 4 - I'd bet dex3 is fine too but obviously no expert. I thought there were 2 possible tranny's in the S80 I have (2000 2.9). The non-volvo shops I spoke with both asked which tranny mine had.

fyi: dealer said filter was about 28$ and gasket also about 28$ + fluid + labor which sounded like it might not be much more, if any, to have it done at the dealer.

just did mine and it will take Dex III or VI about 12 qts because you can never get all the old fluid out unless one does a repeat flush. the filter should only cost you about $15 at parts store. not a difficult job but messy.

No tranny issues with my '99 T6 so far on Dexron VI. Drain and fill is about 13quarts. You can get Dexron VI cheap at Walmart (Supertech). I'm all about drain and fill rather than flush. Do a drain and fill, drive for a week or two, do another.

Default Transmission Service

Hi, I'm getting ready to service my transmission in my 2000 S-80 and want to make sure I do it right. When checking the level of the ATF what is the best way to check it, do I have the car running? Off? in park or neutral? Thanks for the help.

Here's the level check proceedure from VADIS:

Oil level, checking
Warning! Avoid skin contact with the gearbox fluid.
Note! If the gearbox is over filled with oil, there may be operational problems. The oil must be filled to the correct level.
Note! Oil grade: Only ATF fluid Dexron III (with G-license).
Gearbox oil, Volvo P/N 116 1521-8 (1 litre container), 116 1621-6 (4 litre container).

Checking the oil level
Note! Carry out the following check at an oil temperature of 85° ± 5°C. Go to car communication function group 4. Select the digital display parameter. Select the parameter for the gearbox oil temperature.
Preparations:
-park the car on a level surface
-apply the handbrake
-let the engine idle
-move the gear selector lever to position P
-select each gear position, stopping for five seconds in each position
-move the gear selector lever to position P.
Note! Wait two minutes before checking the level.
Note! Cars with Geartronic gear selector assemblies: P-R-N-D-Man. Do not shift up in the manual positions. Cars with conventional gear selector assemblies: P-R-N-D-3–2–1. Stop for five seconds in each position.

Oil level / temperature
Maximum level hot 85°C± 5°C.
Minimum level hot 85°C± 5°C.
Caution! The oil level must not exceed Hot Max.
Warning! The oil is very hot. Use protective goggles and protective gloves.
Caution! Is the oil level above Hot Max? Extract approximately a half a litre of oil.
Check the oil level.
Continue extracting a half litre at a time until the oil level is below Hot Max.
The oil level must be between MAX and MIN.
Caution! The oil level must not exceed Hot Max.
Test drive the car
Note! After replacing the gearbox oil/filter, the “Gearbox oil change” counter must be reset. Use VIDA vehicle communication to reset the counter.

Is it ok to mix ATF? like topping off the original Dex III with VI? or should everything be completely flushed?
