transmission fluid confusion question
Hello, I have a 2000 S80 twin turbo front wheel driveand would like to change the trans fluid and filter. I've read this site but cannot figure out if I'm to use regular Dex III, synthetic dexIII, or the special Mobil fluid 3309? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tony

RE: transmission fluid confusion question
If you dont mind me asking, is there any particular reason you want to do the trans fluid plus filter change? I asked about it before and they told me that normally unless i was towing there would be no real reason to need to do this...
Regards which fluid to use, im not 100% sure but im sure 75 ohm , or tech or one of these guys will know
I did find this handy guide for the job your looking at doing though http://volvospeed.com/Repair/s80_transmission.html
Good Luck, let me know how it goes

RE: transmission fluid confusion question
Trans fluid is a hydraulic fluid which becomes contaminated and looses its ability to lubricate with time. Mabey Volvo's are different but if my trans is the GM 4T65EV-GT, I'll bet many of its failures are due to lack of maintainance. A close friend of mine is transmission builder with over 30 yrs experience and he claims lack of service and heat are two major reasons for failure. I just like the car and am attempting to take care of it by doing preventative maintainance. Anyway, I certainly don't want to put the wrong fluid in. Thanks Tony

RE: transmission fluid confusion question
The Asin/Warner trans uses the "special" Mobil fluid. However.............the Volvo dealer I trade at changes my fluid every two years and uses..........get this............G.M. fluid therefore debunking the theory one must use the "special" fluid. Now I purchased the c70 in 2002 and I have no issues with the trans. By the way...........I question whether you have a filter as I am led to believe that there is not one in the Volvo unit. I do have the fluid power flushed by the dealer and the cost is negligible and the dealer disposes of the used.
