Default Upper radiator hose

Quick question, I ordered a new upper radiator hose since my current one is leaking (slowly). Anyway this might sound dumb, do I need to drain the coolant first then replace the hose??...
Or
Can I just remove the hose & nothing will happen....

If you don't drain the coolant, it will drain itself down to the lowest level that you open up by removing the hoses. Either way is potentially messy, but the mess can be contained somewhat by draining at least some of the coolant via the radiator petcock before removing the hoses.

Thanks!!
I did drain some of the coolant out of the system!!! Replacing the hose itself was pretty self explanatory. What took the longest was cleaning the dried up coolant formations around the leak.
