well how cheap is cheap? i paid 350 for an actron scanner, which has selected generic data and freeze frame data. if thats too much then i know there are ones that just clear codes for like 99. or you can go 5000.00 for a MODIS which i love to use...the best of the best.. scanner, lab scope, graphing meter and information on about every sensor on every car...

If you're gonna buy one make sure you spend the extra $50 or so to get one that puts out live data. That way you can see whats going on with the sensors and try to pinpoint the problem. Codes are pretty general. I made the mistake of buying a cheap one that only reads codes and quickly found I need something more. I m looking at the equus 3130 or the actron cp9180. Both have live data and both you can get for around $160. But if you just want a code reader I can sell you one barely used.

in response; a few hundred dollars is ok , I don't plan on having a full-blown repair facility so I don't want it to bethousands. The reason I'm asking is I don't want to make a mistake like some have done and have buyers remorse wising I would have spent just a few dollars more and got something very usable or spent too much for something out of my league with features that are nice but just not necessary. I want to look at parameters and out-puts and statistics well enough to make educated repairs. I hate bieng a parts changer , it's expensive and doesn't make you look too smart with the wife and adult kids when you "fix it" and it still doesn't work.

then you want to go with one that costs now probably a couple of hundred dollars. it must give live data and freeze frame data. and it will not give any brand specific codes. just generic obd2. but you will get enough information to see what the problem is and diagnose it from there..
