I just bought a 2017 S-90. One of the things I thought was really great was that it was built on the same platform used for the XC-90, and therefore had great towing capacity. 3,500 lbs according to the owners manual. Problem was, when I got the owners manual, it said the towing capacity was at most 900 kg (~2000 lbs) unless the car was equipped with the Tow Pack, in which case it was 3500 lbs as advertised. The problem is, when I called Volvo, they said they are not offering to Tow Pack in North America. Needless to say, I'm not too happy about this.

I called Volvo as well as a few dealers, and no-one even knows what the Tow Pack is. Tow packages usually include things like transmission coolers, and beefed up brakes and suspension. Anyone out there know what the Tow Pack is for this car, or have any experience towing with this car?

 

This is murica; nobody tows with sedans. Those wild and crazy Europeans will tow an aircraft carrier with a Yugo and nobody blinks.

I suppose you could try and import an OEM tow rig from Europe, or just go with a third party solution (much lower quality) like this https://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2017_Volvo_S90.htm although you may want to read up on safety issues of attaching tow rigs directly to a car's frame like this.

 

I actually asked a similar question when I looked at a V90 cross country at the dealer. There is a larger radiator, extra cooling for the transmission, and an electronic flip out tow hitch. It sounds nifty but none of their cars had it and they had the same question of "why would you do that? It's a luxury car!" My response, because some guys just gotta fish! They were not amused...
