Default Starter replacement

I recently have had to have the starter replaced on a 2017 Volvo S90 AWD Inscription.
The mechanic charged me almost $1400. It was $585 for the starter and the rest for labor. I was out of town and it was a Friday so I had to agree. Was I taken advantage of or was it a fair price?

Not sure but it doesn't sound like you got a deal. was this an indy or a Volvo dealer? Genuine Volvo list price for the starter motor is $472 US so there was a $100 premium there. $800 for labor suggests to me they booked 6 hours or so. You'd need to call a dealer or a mechanic who has a quoting tool to get the shop hours estimate but 6 hours seems like a lot unless they have to remove a ton of parts. Last thought is that its pretty rare for starters to die in the first 5 years - I'd be more inclined to think cabling, battery etc. A dealer would be better equipped to run the full diagnostics in this area.

I asked a few local Volvo dealers in Chicago. They quoted me between $1300 to $1500. So I think the Nashville mechanic charged me fairly although they didn’t give me a “deal”.
