I admit I didn't bother to read the whole thread, the title was enough... Forums are hit and miss but overall Volvo forums are great comparing them to other brands, this one is so-so...

Should have read at least some of the thread. Then you'd know they are talking about the new S90.

Unhappy lack of cd player is a safety issue

I also have no interest in "mods' as the one I have is fully loaded as is, EXCEPT that Volvo has decided no one needs a CD player, which means my wife prefers to take our Acura MDX on long trips so she can listen to books on disc. I tried copying discs to a memory stick, but the player in the Volvo refuses to play the chapters in order, you have to manually select the next chapter on the screen which is dangerous. I've looked for the "optional" CD player that is supposed to mount in the center console, but haven't been able to locate one that states it will work in the V90, Volvo parts USA is no help at all, they say you can't add one. Otherwise, this is a great car. And to be fair, most other manufacturers have dropped the CD player as well.
Thanks for sharing and I am with your wife on this. I just joined this forum so I am finding my way. You cannot even buy the S90 new in Australia anymore, so we bought second hand earlier this year. There appears to be a port for a cd player ie room to install it, just where it was in the V60 we had before. It is not safe to be mucking around with a screen (and often not getting anywhere) whilst you are on the road but this is the way things are going. It is curious, as the marketing is to show cars are getting safer and safer but in practice, the complexity means it is not so. I rent a lot of cars when travelling and they have managed to keep things simple. The S90 is a whole new ball game. The result is that we do not try to listen to albums when driving. It is a shame. BTW I would be very surprised if Volvo Head Office did not assiduously read these threads. I know a guy who used to do market research for them and they paid a lot to find out this kind of stuff, now of course they get it for free. 10 years ago I bought a Mazda 6 with a 6 CD stacker bult in. It was a dream to use, just so easy and I have been told the sound is better than from a thumb drive. Those days are gone. Now I pretty much just listen to the radio in the car. At least there is a lot of choice.

Hi GJGadzooksJr,

Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your S90. I still haven't purchased a CD player that is supposed to be compatible and fit in my V90 CC, but am getting closer to trying this. I just didn't want to spend $300 (USD) to solve the problem not knowing if it actually fits. Volvo parts online is NO help, I contacted them and they said the one they show is a replacement only, you have to return a defective unit in exchange. Volvo seems to be trying hard to discourage customers from trying to get a device they want just because they think it isn't necessary. I understand that CDs are on the way out, much like cassettes, 8 tracks, etc. but books on disk are what my wife wants on long trips, not listening to the radio. I'm sure the thinking is subscribe to Audible from Amazon and listen there. Well there is a problem with that, you have to pay to get a book that you may not like after the first few chapters, and you can't get a refund on it. We check out 4 or 5 books and if we don't like one, move on to the next one. I guess we are in a very small demographic, but one with the resources to buy what we like, so Volvo may not get to be our next supplier when I buy my next car, which is a shame, i really like the car otherwise. I guess it is my fault in not wanting to order one equipped the way I wanted it, including the CD player, but was told it could take 5 months to arrive. As it was, I had to go out of state to get mine from a dealer that had one very close to what I wanted. This shouldn't be in these times with Internet ordering and configuration. Dealers just place orders that they think will sell and to heck with the customer who is spending in the neighborhood of $70000. For that much money, one should be able to get what he/she wants. Tesla and others take orders direct from customers and they get to pick the combination of options as they desire, not have to accept what a dealer thinks he can make a quick buck on. Oh well, I'll get off my soapbox now.

GJGadzooksJr: Agree with your 6 CD comment. My wife's 2007 Lexus ES 350 has a 5 CD unit built right into the dashboard. When I ordered my 2020 V90 Inscription (for USA market), I was able to have a single CD player installed in the center armrest, as an option. Not super convenient, but at least I have a CD player. With some exceptions, Volvo is not alone in the demise of the CD player in vehicles, although, IMO, they've gone too far by putting just about all controls in the center video screen. As an example, even seat adjustments have to be made via the screen. What ever happened to KISS (keep it simple stupid) in designing cars? Although, with this said, thank goodness Volvo hasn't elected to reinvent the wheel and go from non-run-flat tires to run-flat tires (which are more costly to replace, typically have a shorter tread life, can be subject to blowouts and, for some tires, have a limited inventory at tire shops).
