2000 V40 T4 bottom end bearing or piston slap but seems to be coming from top end

initially sounded like bottom end bearing or piston slap but seems to be coming from top end - who wants to have a crack at diagnosing it?

Yuk, sounds nasty. Usually top end stuff is lifter related. Do a compression test and see if any of the valves are being stuck open. If it's lower end, it's likely a rod bearing.
