Cant shift (V40 2012)
Hello people,
I have a Volvo V40 2012 D2 with manual transmission and I have an interesting case going on with my car. Took her to a few services but no one was able to identify whats wrong. Maybe someone here had a similar issue so you will be able to consult me.
Issue which occurs maybe once in 1-2 months:
1. Once I start the car - I cannot shift. Its like the stick is being locked out from moving. It moves a bit, but never enough for the gear to go in...
2. If i turn the car off - I am able too put in the gears. If I start the car with a gear put in and cluth pressed down fully - the car moves forward and a strange smell occurs as well.
3. Could not put in a gear for a few days, but after that - everything was working fine again.
Until the next occurrence...
Once this happened in a busy street, but I managed to put in a gear after a couple of minutes rather than days...
Could it be something with the transmission? Or maybe the key cannot be identified thus it blocks shifting or something (however, if that was the case - it would not allow to start the car i guess)?

Hi arachnofilas
I know you posted this a long time ago, but i am experiencing the same problem.
When i start the car, sometimes i can't put it into any gear. Then after about 30 secs its ok, seems to happen more often if the car is left over the weekend without use.
But the other day i drove a stort distance and then tried to do a 3 point turn and i wouldn't go into reverse, then turned the engine off and back on and it was ok.
V40 2017 - manual
Did you manager to get to the bottom of what was wrong?
Many Thanks
Steven

sounds almost like the shifter linkage is way out of adjustment and when the transmission is spinning its not able to move the shifter forks - either that or the clutch / throw out is not fully releasing the clutch. Does the car allow you to start the engine with the transmission already in say 1st or 2nd gear? if you bump the starter and the car moves then you know the clutch is not fully released.
