Default Double whammy - Speedo and ABS failure

Hi,

While driving along happily today, my speedo dial went to zero and stayed there (electronic digital odo) and my ABS warning light came on simultaneously. The car still drives and stops fine. Looking at other threads, I see talk of a possible broken wire behind the 'chunk plate'. I am guessing that this is a term used by my American pals and that it refers to the differential cover on a RWD car? (but please correct me guys!)

My V40 is fwd, petrol and is a 1997 model. Any advice would be most welcome! Thanks in advance,

Neilboy

Default I should have said...

I should have said that earlier today, I had the passenger side front tyre replaced and the passenger side tracking adjusted. The car was fine until some time (and about 50 miles) later.

I hadn't connected this with the failed speedo but having just read about possible causes on the web (this seems not an uncommon failure) - could it be something as simple as a wire to a wheel ABS sensor being dislodged/damaged during the wheel change?

I am away from the car now for a few days and can only check when I get home - it seems coincidental but is it likely?

thanks again!

I guess it is possible.
I had one like yours but the customer would not let us track the problem down.

I am trying to remember... Do these cars have a speed sensor on the transmission? If so and if it came disconnected then it seems that it could cause both the speedo problem and the ABS problem.

I spent some time on the web last night and the simultaneous failure of ABS warning light (if not ABS itself) and speedo seems not uncommon. Most of my skills are on older classics where 20 minutes work would replace a mechanical speedo cable, but I understand that on my V40, an electronic message goes from the ABS unit to the speedo, so if the ABS has a fault, then so does the speedo.

It all makes sense, but I think fixing it could be another matter. I am away from the car for a few days but I am listing all these ideas to try before I have to consider the dreaded Volvo dealer!

Thanks to all and keep those suggestions coming please!

I had the same thing happen on my 99 S70. The ABS module was bad and I lost the speedometer a couple of times. Volvo dealership wanted to replace it for close to $900 stating it would take a couple hours of labor. I found the part online (don't have record of that in front of me right now) where the company sold refurbished ones for $100 and it takes 15 minutes to put it in. Haven't had a problem with it since....however, it was refurbished and problem may come back....just food for thought.
