Default Excessive smoke

I have a volvo v40 1.9 TD s reg that has just clocked 100,000. For the last few months it has been smoking from the exhaust bluey smoke. It has recently got worse especially and obviously from start up. The revs also dip. I did let the tank get very low a few times so thought it may be this. Have put through diesel cleaner but nothing. It stinks of fuel and I am worried it is going to be expensive as we all know Volvos are blooming expensive.

Please help as I keep thinking I will take off soon.

Default RE: Excessive smoke

If it isn't using engine oil & the coolant is clean & not going down and, as you say, you have used plenty of diesel fuel system cleaner then one possibility is that the engine oil has been over-filled, another possibility is that the injectors or the fuel pump need an overhaul - not cheap.

Might be worth filling the tank with quality diesel, using some more cleaner, driving the car & getting revs up in 2nd gear until the rev limiter kicks in a couple of times to clear some of the carbon deposits out, flushing the engine & changing the engine oil + oil filter and the fuel filter, then seeing if there has been any improvement. If not then suspect injectors or fuel pump.

Good luck.
