Fuel tank size discrepancy
Hi all. This is my first post here on the forums.
First, I have a 2003 V40 and I love it. Got it used, with the Volvo CPO deal. The dealer has been great, etc.
My issue, which I didn't realize until I read the manual, lol, is an interesting one.
The issue is that I have, according to the manual and different web sties, a 14 gallon fuel tank. However, even when I am "empty", I only take about 10 gallons of fuel. I get about 28 mpg and the miles and fuel intake all match. When I fill up though, the computer says that I have about 400 miles till empty, which I never get. My first thought was that that was based on "optimal" driving until I realized that it did adjust itself based on my driving habits. My second thought was "OK, I have a bad fuel sensor", but the exactness of my fill-ups are just to exact for the sensor to be on the fritz. And just for the record, I have not taken a spare gas can with me with fuel and just "run it dry". I don't really want to do that as I might cause damage to the engine, which would be bad.
I found this board and wanted to get some input as to what the issue might be, if there is one. Also, I have not mentioned it to the dealer as yet. While I "trust" the dealer and have no reason to believe they might screw me, I like to get totally impartial information before going to the "pros".
Thanks for any and all input in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
This is a subject which has been raised before on these forumsand no definitive answer has been put forward. Do a search on Fuel Tank in the S40 section and you will see the answers that have been given.
If your dealer is a Volvo dealer he may be able to shed more light on this as it does seem to be a common problem which has also been raised on several other Volvo sites. In one instance re-setting the software sorted it.
Sorry I can't be of more help but if you do get it sorted bythe dealer let us know what it was.
