Default Rattling suspension

I drive a 2004 V40 and have been having a rattling sound for sometime originating from the front driver side suspension. I found a few posts on the subject but none seem to answer the question. What is causing this? To give you an better idea of what's going on, on smooth surfaces there is no noise whether starting or stopping. It is only on rough surfaces that it rattles. It has gotten progressively worse for three months.

Thanks in advance!

It could just be a worn strut bearing or strut mount which will be a cheap fix. If it is a bad strut, you should also notice that the ride/handling is bad...

I'm having the same problem with a 2000 V40. Going straight there is a rattle but turning either direction at any speed it goes away. Do you still think a strut or should I look some where else?

Hmmm. Could be something loose like one or more pieces of mounting hardware that is held in place more tightly when side load is placed on it. I'd try pushing down on the bumper with the engine off and the hood open to see if you can hear where it is coming from. It is hard to know what it could be just from your description though.

Good luck!

I was able to fix my rattle problem today. It was my left front sway bar link. The upper attachment to the strut body was bad. I replaced both left and right side links and I no longer have a rattle.
