Default Replacement key/fob

Has anyone had to replace a key to assure that a spare exsisted. Yes....stupidly I misplaced and lost a key to my V40, and am looking for insight on what it takes to get a new one programmed, etc.

Any thoughts or direction appreciated.

Only the dealer can programme the key using diagnostic equipment.

I here it is expensive. I saw a key for an 850 on ebay one time and stupidly didn't buy it. We have only one key for my sons 850 and haven't been able to find one since.

I actually am organising a spare key and remote for my S80... so far i got the remote brand new online for 75 and the dealer quotes me 30 to program it, also, the key will cost me about 80 from the dealer... expensive but surely cheaper than having to replace it after I lose my one and only key...

So when you bought the remote for your Volvo it came keyless? I bought the remote with a key for $150. I purchased it through the used car dealer where I bought my 2006 S80, who the got it for me from the Volvo dealership (supposedly with her discount). Is my only option now to have it programmed by the dealership? They wanted software fee, 1.5 hours labor....what a FR___KN scam!

I have also lost my spare key & remote, so now I keep the key inside the car (well hidden of course), and just carry the remote. This way, I can never lose the one and only key to my car. If I lose the remote, then I'll have to pay the dealer for a replacement remote.

For years, I've always carried a spare lock key in my wallet and left a (hidden) ignition key inside the car (they were GM cars).

That way, as long as I had my wallet on me, I'd never get locked out of my car.

With my 2008 XC70, though, the detachable key is a bit thicker at the end and adds a little more bulk to an already PIA (literally) wallet.

It's saved my butt many times, especially when I was hundreds of miles away from any second set of keys.

Some day, an innovative car manufacturer might make a credit card-sized pass card that can be read from inside a locked car. Of course, companies like OnStar would lose a sales pitch but my concern isn't for some corporate bottom line; it's for the consumer's convenience and wallet.

The stories of the cost of Volvo key fob replacements are astounding.
