S/V40 gearboxes M56 and JC5
Hi
My post equally applies to S40s as V40s
I'm interested in buying a V40 diesel and know the earlier 1.9 is basically the same engine (different fuel pump) as my current 440 1.9 diesel.
The later (post 2001?) common rail engines arent as good as the earlier ones.
Both engines are based on Renault units but I know Volvo upgraded the early unit more so than (if at all!) the later one. I'm also looking to experiment with biofuel so that rules out the common rail system.
My question is: The 440 TD uses the Renault JC5 gearbox which seems to have some durability issues. Volvo also switched to the M56 for the later diesel engine but does anyone know when the switch occured?
Did the early non common rail diesel ever get the M56?
When was the M56 introduced?
You see the early engine is better but the later M56 gearbox is better. dilemma!

Welcome aboard.
The M56 was firstused in the S/V40 in 2001 mated to the D4192T3 or the D4192T4 engine.
I can't find any record of the M56 being used in the 440TD.

Hello
Thank you for your reply!
True, the M56 was never used in the 440. 2001.. that's interesting. What is the difference between the T3 and the T4 engine? Is the engine type ending T4 the later engine used from 2001/2002 until end of production ie the common rail renault unit? Is the T3 the early non common rail engine?
thanks!!

The difference between the two engines is the output. The T3 gives 115 DIN hp @ 4000 rpm. The T4 gives 102 DIN hp @ 4000 rpm.
Both are common rail and both were available from 2000 -2004.
