A common problem amongst Volvos of the older type. It is usually the reverse gear that normally causes the problem. Try looking for worn bushes, (usually nylon and rubber) under the selector box from beneath the car. If you do hard gear changes they wear out very quickly. Normal gear changes, they may last up to 2 years. Also dependant on environment the car is subjected to. ie. Lots of road salt plays havoc with the aluminum bolt that runs through the selector.
Bushes are main deler parts only. Theyll cost around £14.00.
