V40 1.9D strange problem
Hi there.
I have a strange problem occuring with my 1998 V40 1.9TD can anyone help?
Firstly it has done 211,000 miles with a full dealer history up until the end of last year.
It has always felt quite underpowered and smokes a fair bit but I put this down to the mileage and I only use it as a workhorse so can put up with that.
However, after sitting in traffic for a few hours the other day, all of a sudden the engine splutters and starts to rev itself slowly up to the red line. When this happens you also get a disturbing metallic knocking noise. If you switch the engine off and then restart it is usually ok until it sits idling for anything more than 1 minute.
It seems to be doing it when it is very hot outside or has been running recently. More alarming is the fact that it sometimes runs for up to 5 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.
Head gasket was changed by volvo at 150,000 miles.
Can anyone shed any light or is it time to start looking for a replacement car?
Cheers

Usually when a diesel starts pumping out black smoke it is a sign of one or more injectors not working properly. Despite being dealer serviced all its life the injectors are probably the originals unless previous owners have reported problems.I would think that theyhavenever been checked and cleaned and could be causing the other problems.
