v40 tranny gasket
Any one know if the gasket on the trannsmission is going to be reusable? or do need to pick up some permatex? the local parts shop doesn't list a filter or gasket for my car. 2000 v40
What are you doing, changing the fluid and filter?
The I am not sure which transmission you have. Some use a synthetic fluid and it is important that you get the correct stuff. I don't believe that they have a filter.
According to VADIS:
The AW50-42 Use only automatic gearbox fluid (ATF) which fulfills both Dexron II E and Ford Mercon standards.
The AW55-50 Use only automatic gearbox fluid, Volvo P/N 1161540-8 may be used.

I am just planning on changing the fluid. I assume you have to drop the pan do so, although i haven’t looked under the car yet. The current fluid is brown.
The owners manual said to use Dextron III, so dino must ok with mine, Unless a technical service bulletin came out.
thanks
For a drain and fill there is no need to drop the tranny pan, just remove the drain plug. There is no filter.
However, the best option is to flush the tranny. A drain and fill will only exchange about 1/4 of the fluid. Vadis outlines a simple way to flush the tranny using the transmission pump. If you don't have access to Vadis, check the s40concepts.net web site. Search the "How-to" section for really good complete step-by-step instructions with pictures.
I recently did a flush on my S40 - very easy to do. Tranny was not giving any problems - I just did it because the fluid was dark. 8 quarts of Dexron IV is cheap insurance.

IV is 4. ie: Dexron 4. Don't think they have a Dexron 6 yet. One tip: Cover the floor area with a thick layer of newspapers. You are bound to spill some fluid somewhere in the process!
