to build new transmission or no?
Ok I have a 2005 Volvo v50 T5 with 175,000 on the dash. I am having transmission issues. my question is, is it worth rebuilding the transmission or should i get another car?
Come on dude! You have to give us more than that!!
Is this a pristine beauty that you have owned since new, changed the oil, and done all the other scheduled maintenance on time? Or is this a real POS that will soon need tires, brakes, has a cracked windshield, was wrecked and has a mis-match paint job, etc.? A properly cared for Volvo engine should be good for 300K+, but if you are having lots of other problems that negates the great engine.
Bottom line is this. Take the cost of the transmission ($3000?) and take a good hard look at what that buys you as replacement transportation. Will you be better off spending the $3000 on the trans or a different used car? How many miles a year do you drive? Will the money allow you to drive the car for 2 more years without expectation of many more expensive repairs? And don't we all wish we had that crystal ball!! If you put the money down on a new or newer car how much will that car depreciate in value the first year you own it?
For many of us here we are chasing a low cost per mile to drive. My newly totaled '02 S60 cost me $4700 2.5 years ago and about $1500 in tires, repairs, etc. The insurance co valued it at $3800 when I wrecked it 65K miles later, so $6200-$3800 = $2400 or about 3.7 cents a mile. Considering a new car depreciates 30%+ the first year/15K miles and costs an average of $28K that cost would be a whopping 56 cents per mile($8,400/15,000). Late model used car are also still depreciating, though usually not at 30%, but a $15,000 car will still lose $3000 a year for a couple of years, and at 15K miles that translates to 20 cents a mile.
