Engine system and anti skid service required/P1263
Hi all,
I've got a V50 (M84) with the D4162T 1.6 engine (84kW). Yesterday while just getting of the highway, car went into limp mode (although I usually see 3000RPM mentioned, I couldn't get over 2000RPM).
Warnings: "Anti skid service required" and "motor management service required" (car has Dutch language display, but I guess that is what it would translate to).
Without much hope, I searched for the cheap Bluetooth ODBII dongle I had bought a long time ago and tried some Android apps.
One of them gave me quite a lot of info.
First read:
That seemed like quite a lot and there's no timestamps so I had no idea which ones might be relevant. So I copied the text as above, cleared the codes and restarted the engine. Let it run for about 10 seconds (it ran rough in idle, didn't rev it up) and did another scan.
That gave:
The last error leads me to believe there's an issue with injector 3, although I also found this DTC page which has another explanation for the code ("TFP Valve Position Switch-Drive Without Drive Ratio"). However, that page has quite some grammatic errors so might simply be auto-generated.
The original readout gave "offset learning at maximum limit" for all four injectors as well, I'm not sure if that could be a fluke as a result of just one failing.
I'm not a mechanic but not a complete fool either. I've done brake work, oil changes, those kind of things and I'm not afraid of trying work even if that means buying required tools.
I wouldn't mind taking it to a garage, but the two garages I've taken my previous car to (a V70), I've had bad experiences (either ****ty work or a bill that amounted to twice the quote without the promised call in advance).
_IF_ this is an injector that needs to be replaced, I'd take a try at it, but I read that it might require reprogramming which obviously I can't do. I've also seen "refurbished" injectors that might not need reprogramming? I really don't know where I could have that done besides the Volvo dealer which likely isn't waiting for someone who DIY'ed on his car.
To be clear: I would not mind having the work done by someone if I would have trust in them. I know these things and the labour cost money and the idea is not to get the cheapest thing done. It's just that I don't really know where I'd take it.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

While searching the forums for explanations yesterday night, I came across different "solutions" or possible causes such as
* bad battery,
* dirty CEM contacts,
* All kinds of things.
Thinking about the "Indicates a low voltage condition exists at the injector output of the NG module for cylinder No. 3 when high voltage is expected." explanation, I figured the NG module would likely be the unit controlling the injector.
If that is correct and the injector is faulty (not taking in to account a possible short in the wiring), that fault should get replaced with another if I disconnect the injector, right?
So I cleared the codes again, disconnected injector 3 and started the engine for 10 seconds again. Afterwards I got

First, no ideal of the anti-skid warning thing. I'd clear all the codes and hope it disappears.
If you're getting a P1263 - AND it really DOES indicate that there's a short from the "high" to "low" side AND it happens with the injector unplugged, it seems that it would indicate a short in the harness, not the injector. I'd try using an ohmmeter and see if you get something close to a short on the #3 coil connector harness (and compare it to another cylinder's coil harness plug).

Sorry, maybe my reply wasn't clear. I figured I could unplug the suspect injector and see if that changed the error code.

- If I would replace it myself (as far as I see in the Haynes manual and online video's, that seems reasonable), do I always still need to go somewhere to have it programmed (or is that not necessary for some models or refurbished ones)?
- Can the anti skid error (which seems to have come up at exactly the same moment) be related or simply a fluke caused by the original injector dying?

Sorry for the confusion (you were clear enough - I should have caught that). The good news is that you can measure the resistance of the injectors until the cows come home without hurting anything (they get slammed with MUCH higher voltages millions of times in their "day job"). Yeah, I'd suspect that injector.
I'm not remotely familiar with diesel injectors though, so don't know if any special matching / programming is required (like the turbo variant of my BMW 5-series, which requires a doctorate to work on the injectors, unlike the NA variant like mine, which requires sticking a new one in and forgetting about it). ;-)
I do suspect that your injector issues will all go away after you put in a new injector and drive it for a while to relearn the parameters with all working injectors. Better yet, if you have a bidirectional scan tool (looks like yours is), you could reset the adaptations and probably speed the process along.

I wouldn't expect my tool to support the specific "action" required to update the injector if needed. Although it does indeed to have some bidirectional capabilities (I can clear the fault codes), it is a chinese thing that cost maybe €5 (I think exactly the same as this one) I wouldn't suspect any additional capabilities. I've never really understood how that works though. Since it is likely software support, I wonder why there aren't any (paid) Android (or Apple, same principle) apps that have functionality available in more expensive (>€1000) tools. But then again, maybe it isn't just all available using a standard CAN transceiver as those cheapass dongles have or maybe require higher speed.
One of the video's I saw on changing the injectors showcased the functionality to "program" the injector using a €1000 tablet-like device. Can't remember exactly which. I looked into it, thinking it would be worth the money if it would cost something like €300, but it was several hunderds more than that.

When I buy a "new" car (in my case that means 10+ years old with over 100,000 miles) it's almost always a European "oddball" of some sort, so I really need the ability to look into its soul and figure out what it's doing (or not doing).
The last couple cars (a BMW 530xi touring and Mercedes GLK 350) are good examples. I actually loaded the "dealer service software" (clone) on a laptop, but bought a Autophix bidirectional scanner for each (so I can carry them in the vehicle in case an issue comes up while not near my garage). Both were (IIRC) right around US$100. The BMW uses the Autophix 7910, and the Merc the 7770. There may be better options but that seemed (to me) to be a reasonable, easy, relatively cheap way to go. Let's face it, if you're DIYing, or even if you just don't want to be blind to what the mechanic / dealership is telling you something like that scanner will pay for itself very, very quickly.
