Default V50 Tires: Size change?

My 2007 V50 (base model) is due for new tires. It now has the Continental 205/55R 16 91V. The tire shop says I could also use a 205/50R17. What's the difference? Can they use the same rims? Does it make a difference in clearance or driving?

I live in Hawaii and don't need an all weather tire. Does a "summer" tire make that much difference on gas mileage or handling?

Thanks so much!

The 205/50R17 would need a 17" rim as opposed to your 16" rims.
