Just bought this car, 100,000 miles. Test drive suggested noisy tires, but that was wrong. The noise begins as soon as you drive off and increases up to it's loudest at 25 mph. As you go faster the other road and wind noises drown it out a bit and I don't think it gets louder. Shifting into neutral at speed allowing the revs to drop doesn't change the volume of the noise. Could it be a wheel bearing, is there a drive shaft hanger bearing or is it in the AWD system ?
I sat in the back and listened out both rear windows - couldn't hear it outside car.
Any help would be welcome and thanks.

sounds like it could be a wheel bearing. My experience is to describe a wheel bearing noise as a "moan". Does it sound different when you are turning left vs right? Most AWDs do have a center bearing for the drive shaft but I'd suspect there'd be other noises when that goes like thumps at start up. Since these cars use a Haldex system, most of the power is driven to the front wheels except when slippage is detected so there not a lot of torque hitting the driveshaft in normal conditions.

 

It's speed related, can't hear it below 5mph, increases till maximum at 25mph and then seems to stay at that volume, have not gone over 70, hard turning left-right-right makes no difference. I agree, it's likely not the driveshaft.

 

It was the L.R. bearing. Now I need to find one online, dealer parts quote with tax-
$500 ++

 

Go with the Volvo OEM bearing. I have heard issues with other brands. Also, where ever you have it pressed into the knuckle, make sure they have the proper tool. If they press directly on the hub they will likely screw up the bearing.

FCP is very helpful on the phone if you want to ask stuff like who is the OEM supplier. Quite often OEM parts are the same as Genuine Volvo with the branding removed from the part and the box, so its worth it to do some research.

I'm not sure about the $500 price - that may be part plus labor. Tasca shows Volvo PN# 31340686 at $180 for a Genuine Volvo rear wheel hub for the P1 cars.

Thanks, I've ordered it from eeuroparts, about $200 shipped to Canada. Local dealer is $470 plus 13% tax. Our OEM parts are ridiculously expensive, my wife just took the door mirror off her BMW convertible - over $1400 here - got OEM from BimmerWorld, $300 shipped. Must be how they pay for our healthcare.
