Default '01 T5 with hesitant transmission

Hi all,

We've had our 2001 V70 T5 for about 3 years now and love it. Could only replace it with another. Anyway, recently it's developed a bit of 'slack' in the transmission, sort of "lurchy*' hesitation when you come off the overrun and give it some throttle. The car has done about 130,000km / 80,000 miles.

The service light in the dash comes on, which maybe related to this...

This is not something I can do anything about as the car's life would be measured in metres if I tried to service it, but I'd like to know what the issue is so I can (a) budget for it to be fixed and (b) brief the dealer like I know what I'm talking about.

Having done a quick search, it would seem this is the weak point in this car. I saw one thread which mentioned $7500 for a new transmission. Is this the worst case scenario? If it is, what are the other options?

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

*Excuse my technical language but I figure it describes it as best as I can

Is the fluid clean and full?
Does it seem like it is slipping?
You might have to have the transmission codes pulled first to see what they say.

Its funny, Ive got 2 T5's, one of them has a new tranny and the other doesnt, similar mileage on both.
At times the one with the new tranny seems great, then it misbehaves, the other, (original one) had a couple of "incidents" where it would slam into 2nd gear turning right only when cold and applying throttle after coasting / braking from about 50MPH.

But given that if I didnt do that particular move, its fine, so I just dont do anything until its warm and keep changing the fluid at the recommended or less intervals.
