'01 V70 Delayed shifting
I recently purchased a 2001 V70 2.4T w/97k miles, in apparently very good condition. However, I've noticed at times, with full throttle acceleration, the trans. delays shifting even allowing rpm's into and beyond redline. Once under light acceleration, it seemed to 'miss' 2nd gear which caused rpm's to rev up slightly and then shifted into next gear.
I have no experience with these FWD Volvo's. Hoping it's not signs of major tranny problems. Anyone out there have any ideas?
Thanks, Sean

I've been having some little issues myself - not the missed shift like you reported, but definitely some delayed shifting. I've had my 2001 V70 XC since new, it seems like I've had to have the transmission fluid replaced pretty frequently more recently, though. When I do get it replaced the car shifts better for a while; the last time I had it done was April 08 and it's running well currently, but the place I just had my oil changed at said I should have it done. (not sure if they're honest, though; I need to look at it myself!)
Does anyone actually know how frequently this should need to happen? My car has about 98K miles.

Yup!
My input in Australian $$ and as such probably for comparison only.
Classic AISIN auto tranny failure imminent. Many of these were done under warranty as there IS a design fault in the shuttle valves.
50K KMS MAX between changes of OIL **MUST USE GENUINE VOLVO STUFF ($$)**
There are guys out there who can change the valves and fix them ~$3K ....
but Volvo does not and fits a "factory remanufactured" unit $7K fitted(NEW more than likely) which is often worth 1/3-1/2 the price of the whole car!!!!
It is a "learning" auto ie if you take it easy, so does it, if you get stuck into it, ie mountain drive then it will sharpen up the shifts. This in mind I find if I want to launch it from the lights I'll throw it across to"manual" mode and push it into the next gears 500rpm short of the redline, 1)its quicker 2) if you've been doddling around it will forget to change into 2nd gear and hang on the limiter for ages.
BTW ive got 2 of these (2001 V70 T5s) one has a new tranny, the other doesnt.
lets just say I have the money in the bank for the day it fails (as they ALL do)
Good luck
Karl

Sounds like I have similar issues with my trans. I have a V70 GLT that recently began delaying my manual shift. It revs an additional 1000 rpm. The car still shifts strong, but that delay has pushed me into the rev limiter a few times.
I checked fluid several times, looks OK. I think that I will change it any ways.
Does any one know where I can buy Genuine Volvo fluids?
Thanks,
A

Sounds that your auto tranny still has the "STOP NEUTRAL FEATURE" on.
Take it to the dealer for tranny software update to remove that feature. Do it ASAP or your tranny will be toast soon, if not already.

Mine does it too (doesn't sound as bad as yours though - I've never touched the redline because of it). Seems to be worse when the engine is not 100% warm.
Mine has been doing it since 90K miles though and I've got 125K now.
Checked tranny software and it was up to date - not sure where to go from here, going to do the B4 servo cover and a fluid change and see what happens.

You all need to check your kickdown cables an throttle adjustments. If the kickdown cable is off, full throttle isn't even possible. Oh, and don't ever let you motor rev into the red unless you have money to burn.
Thanks for the info jda.....did some research on stop neutral. My 98 GLT doesn't have it, thank goodness....why should customers have to pay for correcting a bad idea.
I have 175K miles, it's time for a tranny flush and I'll have dealer look cables.

There are several postings on changing transmission fluid. Volvo recommends fluid change at 52,500 miles under severe conditions. Any stop and go driving in considered severe in today's environment of the asphalt jungle.... There is posting for transmission fluid change and recommend fluid. Mobil 3309 that is very cost effective and great qualities. Also have software updated as quoted in earlier postings.
There is no kickdown cable. This is not a 78 Caprice Classic. I have seen PNP switches cause this problem because the computer is not sure which gear it is in. Replace the PNP switch first.
Kickdown cable...geez...

Is the shifting issue only happens in second gear. Volvo has a TSB on a second to third gear shifting issue. It requires a replacement of a hard part that is fairly easy access and not very expensive. Please let me know what you have found out on this vehicle.. Thank you
I am experiencing a lot of what is reported, delayed shifting, hard downshift, and for the first time, it wouldn't go beyond 2nd gear and wouldn't let me accelerate at all. I had the A/C on full blast because it was over 100 degrees. I shut-off the AC, and let the car slow down, then started to accelerate again. This time it shifted fine. It's still doing the clunky downshift, and now I am not running the A/C and sweating my **** off. It occasionally stick on the upshifting.
Sounds like I need to do the following:
1. "STOP NEUTRAL FEATURE" computer upgrade check
2. Flush the transmission/new fluid (3309)
3. Replace PNP switch
4. Volvo has a TSB on a second to third gear shifting issue. It requires a replacement of a hard part that is fairly easy access and not very expensive.
Any other thoughts?
