02 V70 w/75K miles, worth rebuilding tranny?
2nd owner of dealer serviced 2002 V70. Five months after extended warranty expired, I have experienced slippage with automatic transmission around 15mph. Local dealer shared with me that new transmission will cost $4,600.00 to replace and tranny can not be rebuilt. I am awaiting 2nd opinion from local transmission shop but I am trying to figure out if this common problem with 02 V70 and should I invest any more money into car or trade-in while it has some value? Your thoughts appreciated...

Warranty?
Are they offering say a 3yr/36K warranty with the new unit?
Your "new" unit may still be a factory rebuild, that's just how it goes.

they just aren't cheap. Once you factor in labor $3,600 up seems right.

Before spending the big bucks on a transmission replacement, you might want to try a few (relatively) cheap methods for improving the life/performance of your transmission. Amsoil just came out with a transmission flush product, which is supposed to be pretty good (you pour it in through the transmission dipstick, run the car for about 20 minutes, and it removes deposits and varnish; this will have to be followed by a fluid replacement); Auto-Rx (available online only) is also effective at cleaning out deposits and varnish, and also helps to re-condition transmission seals (Auto-Rx is also poured in through the dipstick, but you have to drive it for at least 1000 miles for it to properly condition the transmission). I put some Auto-Rx in the tranny of my '01 V70 T5 about a month ago, and noticed significant improvements in shifting after only 50 miles.
Finally, there's the somewhat more elaborate process of installing a shift kit from Transgo (just google their name, you'll find the site right away). Transgo is well-known and well-respected for their shift kits for domestic automobiles, and they just came out with a kit for our transmissions. Not sure of the exact cost (probably between $100 and $200), but lots of people have reduced/eliminated slippage and the like by installing Transgo shift kits.

Or, you could get lucky and improve performance and longevity by fluid replacement. The 3x drain and refill method detailed on other threads.
Before you give up hope, I believe you should try this method. The most you'll lose is a few hundred dollars. And, while I don't know that it applies to your 02, there is another weak spot in early 5 speed Aisin-Warner transmissions that is a relatively cheap fix. Sorry, I can't remember its name right now, but its something like a solenoid. (Check Search function here).
Also, I have read that motor/transmission mount issues can lead to strange transmission behavior. I'd check these three relatively cheap inspections/fixes first.
Just because the dealer says you need a new trans doesn't mean you really need a new trans. You might, but have these been checked?

with no slippage. . Also you can check Recall websites DOT ectera to discover recalls or "campaignes" the latter is at any manufactures option. Last note if Volvo or Mobil 3390 AT fluid were not used to top off or service any other ATF WILL ruin your tranny . I used the Mobil 3390 check compatability. On another forum posts sain a certain Toyota ATF worked IDK did'nt try i t Last if you're having an occasional shif bang up shif or down shift or occ /slight slippage between 1-2, 2-3? I had this problem and drained the trans 3 times removed the drain plug BE CAREFUL to remove the correct plug , and replace the aluminium drain plug washer/seal DO NOT use a Copper one as it will weather weld itself . Measure what you drained out put in fresh drive easily for a few tanks of gas or two in heavy stop and go driving repeat process. This took care of 97% of my problems plan on software upgrade should be $75.00- ? $200.00 MAX. Trans dip stick is hidden under many hoses in ft of the drivers side of the car. Last Volvo says you do not ever need to change the ATF check around the web IMHO you do. I worked as a Volvo parts mrg yrs ago and am fortunate to have a 10+yr Volvo Mstr tech as best friend who did the work for / with me. Strongly reccomend you have a qualifie mechanicfamilier with Volvos do so. No gauranties and good luck.

Hi There was a campaign on many auto transmissions where the stealership OH sorry for typo, LOL can flash or upgrade you're trans software to account for normal wear. If however tranny was low on AT fluid then that would cause damage and account for slippage but w/out more info can't tell . I hcan tell you a good used unit can be had for USD$800-$1,200 tops if you know who you are buying from and it came out of a good runing vehicle, caviet emptor for junck yard units . Not selling but do know of a good unit w/ winter mode switch 2001/2004 +200? At Cliff St Garage Worcester Ma Google them . BUT 1st I would call Volvo N/A for assistance as this should not have have failed at so low a mileage. My V70XC has 150k

I live in the Boston area, any suggestions on mechanic other than dealer to look at car? Dealer told me it would cost $1,100 to flush transmission and upgrade software with only 50% probability that slippage would be corrected. Dealer went on to sa that they give me only $1500 for trade-in... We hate to trade it in as its been great car and we expected so many more years/miles from it.

Valve body replacement. That's what it is. Not solenoid. Also, have someone who knows what he's looking for check the mounts.
The "easy" solution is to replace the transmission. More profit for dealer, too.
Locate some independent shop where they'll actually perform diagnosis and know what problems exist with this Volvo transmission.
