1997 2.5 20V overheating and now rough idling
Hey everyone,
we recently purchased a 1997 2.5 20v V70, I had it serviced the other day, got the transmission serviced, replaced the coolant and so on, a few days later I noticed the temperature gauge was over 3/4 so I stopped to let it cool down, after that I limped home where I checked the hoses and radiator. The hose going from the engine into the radiator was very hot and under pressure where the hose going back into the engine was colder and less pressurised. According to the forum and a mechanic the thermostat had locked up. As I was going to take the car into the shed to change the thermostat the car run very rough while idling, if the engine goes over 1200 round its sounds normal but if I engage any gear it starts to run rough again. has anyone had a similar experience, or is there a chance that I cooked the engine? there was no steam or loss of water while hot.
Would appreciate your help,
all the best and merry christmas everyone

hi there... you say they replaced the coolant? ok fine but did they get all the air out of the system? sounds to me like an almighty air lock......to me... of course if she is misfiring there is a possability that you have a headgasket problem and water is briging the cylinder or cylinders get someone to carryout a pressure check of the system this will show up any such problems with the cooling system.. very hot engines run rough and uneven.... good luck... All Good
The car had no problem since the thermostat has been replaced, no damage to any other parts as far as we could see. Runs smooth as before, doesn't loose water or use oil, no bubbles in radiator bottle no leaks on the floor. She is due for a service soon, so I get the mechanic to have another close look at it. But it seems we where quiet lucky

Hey Kira
The Volvo has done around the 155.000 km but the thermostat is a common thing to happen, just replaced one in my Hilux. My mechanic reckons, every time a car overheats badly (as in more than 3/4 of the gauge) the thermo should be changed as it could be damaged by the heat. And by all means its a $30.00 item and 1/2h work, rather that than a busted engine
