98-99 was a screwed up year or all makes and models with the new at the time OBDII system. The 98 and 99 model V70 required a special scan tool to reset the liight, unlike on the later models which was simply hold the trip and turn the key, or hold the reset on the DIM control.

The OBD II began on some models in the 95 model year, all by 1996. By 98-99 it was fully implemented and not a "screwed up" year series.

OBD II is much better than previous systems.

they were experimentation years for the manufactures. They had weird wiring issues and did a few little things like the service lights.

OBDII version 3 is out already, along with high speed bus can, and lan systems (talking about all makes and models)

I have a V70 first registered in the UK at the end of 1998 so it's an S reg for all you UK members. I followed the service light resetting procedure with holding the odometer reset button in, turning the ignition to position III and waiting for the service light to flash three times, then releasing it. Turning off the ignition and then it is reset! If you miss the three flash or hold the button in to long i.e. until it stops flashing, it will NOT work.

As for timing belts, they can deteriorate with age and most manufactures recommend belt replacement between 60000-80000 miles and from 5-8 years. Best to just call the dealer and check with them

Good luck.

hello there and thank you for the reply.
this was an older post and by now i taped it over with a bit of a square piece of tape and all is good. maybe the bulb will burn out eventually...
just kidding. if one day i feel creative, i'll give it a go and see if your recommendation works on my car.
thanks again,
as to the belt, it was replaced in 2007 according to the sticker and the car has less than 20k miles since then.
