Default 1999 V70 Intermittent start

My V70 is having some intermittent start issues. Usually on the first attempt to start the car it will fire up, but die after the start UNLESS i rev the engine up for a few seconds. If i fail to rev the engine, the car will start, then choke. If i attempt to start again immediately afterwards, the car will turn over but will not start. if i let the car sit for a minute, it will usually start up - but i've been reving the engine after the start just to ensure that it will stay running. No error codes appear on the dash (am i looking on the right spot? i've had the car for a week now) Given that - the car will turn over forever, i don't think it's the battery. I suppose it could be the starter - i was going to try Tech's light bulb trick to see if that helps. I was going to change the fuel filter first - seems like about the cheapest and quickest possible cause and the car is at 114k, so it needs to be done at any rate (i don't know if it was done at 100k). I can hear the fuel pump at pos II. I guess from reading the possible causes in this case could be
A. the fuel filter
B. The Starter
C. The Imobilizer - i have no clue how the imobilizer works or if a 99 has one
D. maybe a weak battery, although this should be easy enough to check with a meter

Other ideas? Thanks

It is a big rectangle aluminum part under the intake if it is turbo. Non-turbo it is on the side of the engine.
