Hi, The main issue with the 2000-2001 was transmission, take it for a good drive,
get the car up to full operating temp and test the tranny, kick down's etc..
they are known to jerk and flair from 2-3 or 3-4
throttle body's are also an issue with that model.
if you can go for a late 03-04 or later...
by that time most of the issues were sorted out.
also make sure it has a full service history, with frequent inbetween oil changes as being a turbo
the oil should really be changed every 5k km or so..
good luck

I changed my belt at 90k km, the belt was showing signs of wear.
It's no more expensive than any other car to change, try to stay away from the dealer as there
labour charges are higher,
The transmission i think is something that must be done at the dealer,
And yes it's expensive!!!
They have the appropriate software and tools to do the job right.
If you search this forum you will read some horror stories regarding transmission installs.
Most from non dealers.
If you can't afford a 03-04 v70 go for the older shape xc70 98-99
They are amongst the most reliable models i think.
The 01 xc 70 was the first release of the new model...so they had issues..
The 98-99 xc70 was the last release of that older model, by then all the bugs were all ironed out..
good luck

FWIW, my indy mechanic warned me against 99-01 XC, or even non-XC V70's in those years because of numerous electrical issues. I don't speak from experience on this, and I don't mean to poo-poo your efforts, just passing along some words of caution from someone else who knows about these things

01's for the most part are bad cars with weak trannies.
I will have an 01 for sale in a week or so that I KNOW is a great one with a new tranny.
If you're on the east coast (USA) this one is THE best 01 I know of and it's pretty cheap
Email me if you're within 3-400 miles of Philadelphia (PA)

I don't know the % of cars. I think they put a upgraded transmission in when they change it out...so that may have the problem fixed! I am just giving you a heads up on what to look for..
1.Transmission.(jerking & flare inbetween gears)
2. Regular service intervals,(sludging in v70 motors is common, this will lead to oil pressure problems possibe engine failure )
3Throttle bodys (starting and stalling issues)
4.Oh yeah brake boosters are known to fail inside 100,000km i forgot about that one LOL!!!
Have the car checked out before buying it.
It may cost $200.00 but its well worth it..
If i had my time again, and knew what i know now, i would not have purchased a first release v70 (same motor as XC70) .
I'm not trying to scare you, i'm trying to equip you with as much knowledge as possible.
If things go wrong they can be expensive to fix..
Many mechanics in Australia do not have the appropriate tools and knowledge to fix them, if thing go wrong on a grand scale...therefore you have to go to the Stealership (dealer).
Dealers charge like wounded bulls, make no mistake..
To give you an example
I have replaced the oil pan o'rings, (sludging in motor oil pressure issues)
I have a sometimes Jerking trasmission.( i flush it every 20,000km)
I have replaced the brake booster.(being right hand drive the whole sub frame had to be dropped to get to the booster, big labour $$$$$ $750 dollars for booster).
I had a cracked turbo return line.
I have replaced all the cam seals (because of the sludging issue).
My oil pump o'ring blew out.
I have spent in excess of 4k fixing al these issues.
Included in that is some maintanance Timing belt, tensioners, serpy belt..
All this on a car that had 59,000km on the clock when i purchased it, with a full Volvo service history. it now has 130,000km
Maybe i have had some bad luck...but i will tell you i'm not the only one with the same issues popping up all the time..
How do you think i found this place.
Not because my Volvo was reliable!!
Anyway it's your call.
good luck
