2004 V70 fuel economy
Ihave checked my fuel economy of my "plain vanilla" V70 - just the 5-cyl engine with auto transmission. OnAug. 5, 2008highway driving, I got 32.5 mpg (with a big mountain to climb) for a 100 mi trip. In city driving, I am getting 25.2 mpg. I think this is pretty impressive. I am a careful driver and do not have a "heavy foot." How does this compare to what others have found?
I have the '01 model, same configuration as yourself. I get almost exactly the same as you do, perhaps 1 to 2 MPG more. Being a new Volvo owner, I'm very impressed and am really liking this car compared to the other imports I have owned, including VW.
I recently took apart the entire air intake system and cleaned it piece by piece. I will be installing a K&N filter in the next few weeks. I'm curious to see if the mileage goes up. So far, this is the best 168 HP I've ever felt.

I wouldn't install the K&N filter if I were you. I've owned Dodge Diesel's and what this does it coat the intake with oil (that's how it catches the dirt in the first place is with the oil) and then any dirt or dust that does get into the intake is trapped by this oil film.
Try a Hastings filter if you want to upgrade to a better filter or some other non-oil type.
Just my opinion.

I see 30 - 30.5 mpg with my '03 2.4 T in highway driving (at speeds that require some attention to the presence of law enforcement officers) This is MD/PA/NY driving with substantial grades. I used to do about 0.5 mpg better but then I replaced the Michelin MXV4s with Pilots (the road behavior change was well worth the loss)

My daughter and I have competition to see who can keep the average higher when driving.
We usually get 28-30 for most around town stuff with a little highway thrown in. On longer
trips, if we are really careful and keep it under 70, we can usually make 34-35 mpg. On a
recent trip, I tried drafting some trucks and got about 38 over 200 miles. I found a couple
extra MPG when I stick with the better octane gas. It really is worth it even though it seems
like it hurts at the pump. Also a 'plain jane' 2.4 V70.

Ive got an 02 and get 29-30 on HWY with my last 250 mi ride, and 25 CITY, so I can't complain.
I started using 5w-20 oil like my Honda uses, but Im actually thinking of using the newer 0w-20 oil and see if that increases mileage some from less resistance.
