Default 98 V70 ABS malfunction

For some 5 months now, my ABS system has been activating itself randomly, sometimes the light goes on when I am not even braking. I can be coming to a nice smooth stop on dry pavement and the car will do that vibrate thing, with a kind of kickback on the brake pedal, light will go on - or off! - and then stay on for a random # of miles, and go off any old time. (both ABS and TRACS lights - push TRACS button on the dash, no response) Or when I turn the car on or off the light will go on or off. I had my shop test, and they could not diagnose - however they said I needed new rear brakes. So I had the rear brake calipers, etc repaired. At this time they told me the rear wheel motion sensor was bust. (I kind of suspect they busted it during the repair, actually, and didn't want to say so.) So then they fixed that too. All told, over 900$ in repairs - this weird on/off thing STILL happening.
Any suggestions? I do not feel entirely safe with brakes behaving oddly. And annoyed at having spent a lot of money with no result.
Thank you.

You were taken by those bastards. The issue is the ABS module has failed, common in these cars.

The good news is that they can be repaired for under $100. Do a search on ABS module repairs.

The car still driveable without the ABS unit, but you lose the speedometer.

Thanks for yr input! I hope you are right. I just have to find myself another repair dude now. I am out of funds - is it more or less safe to continue driving w/ it as is? It's kind of startling when it goes on and off but I kind of need my speedometer...
