Default 98 V70 GLT Codes P0243 and P0171

Was driving home in the V70 yesterday and it started running real rough and then stalled. It started right back up and seemed to run fine, but the Check Engine light came on. Then it ran but was not very responsive when I pushed on the accelerator. I am not sure it was in "limp mode", but it just didn't feel normal either. It would do 50 or 60 mph, but when I floored it the rpm's would go up but it didn't feel like it was acclerating like normal.

Codes from odb-ii were:

P0243
Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction

and

P0171
System too Lean (Bank 1)

The electronic boost controller might have gone bad.
It is located on the side of the air box. It should clip on there.

You might also want to check the vacuum lines for it and make sure one didn't break.

Did the car feel like it had extra power before the light come on?

I didn't notice it feeling like it had extra power. It really felt like the fuel pump was going, but then it started up and ran good enough to get it home. The vacuum lines look to be ok, but I didn't really take anything apart. You are talking about the piece on the back side of the box close to the engine right? I clips on there and has a bunch of lines running to it?

Yes that is what I am talking about.
If that valve see to much boost or a fault it throws a code and cuts the boost down.

So should I just replace the electronic boost controller? Looks like a pretty simple job. I could not find one on fcpgroton.

Before replacing it I would reset the code and see if it comes right back. If it comes right back then I would replace it.

Will do.

By the way I got my check from the insurance on the T5R. Still have not got an estimate yet from the body shop though. I got the white trim piece on and they look much better than the ones with holes.

Glad it is going pretty smooth now.
A really funny thing is the place I work now has a couple of junk 850's with the solid covers on them. Remember I was looking for a set to send so I could still keep a set on the car till I got them painted? They have 2 cars with them. LOL

Hi, You guys mentioned a Code,
P0171
System too Lean (Bank 1)

My 1998 V70GLT (2.5L Turbo fwd) has that same code coming up and I was wondering...
About 2 months ago it was rearended, and had been messed up, We had it fixed and it looks good, but After we got the car back, It was making a funny sound (like a rumbling Exuast noise) we looked into it and Found no leaks but we found it had bad idlers on the Timing Belt. We replaced the Timing belt and Idlers as well, Since then I drove it and its a Real dog, No power, the RPM's will go up but no Vroom (if you will) and This car used to fly like no other Wagon in town.
Is there a chance the car is off timing? would it give a code if it was? It runs (idles) smooth but has no power. could it be the timing or what do you think?
Can you help me with this one?

thanks ☺

Default now what do i do?

Ok so you were right about the timing being off....
the next problem is how do I get it right again?
The old timing was set by lining the little marks up on the Cams to the Marks on the Belt Cover, and after the idler went bad on it (98' v70glt 2.5) it kinda ruined the belt cover by chewing it all to peaces...
so we got anew cover but it doesnt have the same markings on it...
do you think a timing light will work on it? I had a friend who is a mechanic at the Ford dealership tell me that timing lights don't work on Volvo's.
I still have the peace of the belt cover with the marks but im not sure on how to get it to work when all the rest of it is gone.
any ideas?

Thanks so much for you help ☺

Is the cover the right one for the car?
If so check this site out. It might help some.

Smile good link

Wow... that site was really good, wish I would have seen that before we did the timing belt.
The cover fits really perfect, It looks exactly like the old one, the only difference was that it didnt have the marks on it. I think maybe it was a cheaper part made by a company other than volvo. it was like super cheap compared to the others and i think maybe we messed up on that.... (dang..)
But I think my dad and I will have it apart this afternoon to check the timing. when I read through the link you posted, I saw that you should turn the crank over a few times to see if the timeing lines up right.

like when you start it tells you:
10. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to the number 1 cylinder TDC. The lower crankshaft will line up with the mark on the engine block. Make sure that the timing marks line up with the camshaft markings.

I dont think we did that, then when we were done, I think we just turned it over once to see if it was right (it was late, we were tired)
19. Rotate the crankshaft two more times and check the markings on the camshaft sprockets to match the crankshaft...

We'll try it and see what happens, the part about my engine being a interference engine is kinda scary, hope we dont screw it up.
It takes alot to do that right? hope so...

Thanks
I'll let you know what happens, or if im in the market for a new volvo... im thinking a T5 next...

Talking ITS ALIVE! Muahahahaha.....

Ok so we took it all apart.
retimed it, and it was off by like 3 Teeth marks, We marked all the lines and made sure they were perfect, then we slaped it back together... and...
Its awesome again... perfect.
Lots of power, and fun to drive again. no lag at all
Its sooooo SWEET!~
I love it...
I was disappointed though, I did want to get a T5. Maybe next time though...
Now the only problem is that I have to pay for a ticket, I guess your not allowed to Burn the wheels of you car on a Public road... didn't see that one coming... but oh well
The car is Awesome again..

Thanks soo much for all the help...
maybe you could help me with one more thing....
could you send me $150 for the ticket?
I would be most grateful =)
thanks again
