Default Multiple codes - P0443, P0447, P0243, P1655

Hi, all... my car's been running fine, but just threw the codes listed (P0443, P0447, P0243, P1655, as well as a pending P1332). It's been my experience that multiple codes are almost always the result of one common thing (fuse?) going bad rather than a handful of separate components all failing in unison.

I was hoping that this one would ring a bell with someone out there. I checked all the under-hood fuses (all OK). I can reset the OBD error codes, but the check engine light (and codes) will return as soon as I start the car again.

The car does seem to be down on power... runs OK, but not really as peppy as it should be. Kinda like a Toyota... ;-)

Here are the descriptions for each of the codes:
P0243: Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction
P0443: Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Malfunction
P0447: Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Open
P1655: EVAP Purge Solenoid Control Circuit
P1332: Knock Sensor 4 Low Input

Hmmm. Not really sure what the problem was. I was troubleshooting the various actuators that are powered off the same supply (11 B/5 fuse, Relay FMA2 / 2/32, connection 53/309), and it seemed that I wasn't getting B+ (aka "battery voltage") anywhere. I traced it back to the relay, and saw that the relay wasn't energized. I realized that the relay is energized by a grounding signal from the ECM, and then realized that it probably DOES matter whether the engine is actually running (as opposed to just having the key in the run position).

When I actually started the car, I did have B+ where it should be, and I was able to clear the codes and they don't seem to be coming back. It also seems like my idle is improved, as is the throttle response (this all based on just rev'ing the engine in the driveway - drive test to follow). I did switch out the ECM relay with the one adjacent during the process, so it's possible that I will be seeing other problems... but I doubt it (since I heard both of them engage in a static test). So in the end, I'm not really sure if I fixed anything, or perhaps I just got the ECM to reset by pulling the relay out, or maybe fixed a wonky connection by pulling and re-seating the relay.

Dang these are complicated cars... if I wasn't trained in electronics I'd be looking for a '60's VW bug to drive!
