The radio in my "new to me" GTL acts up. A speaker in the right front door and in a rear door intermittently go on and off as if there is a short. Any ideas to what would cause this and how do I fix it?

I feel your pain. In general when that happens its either a loose connection or the speaker grounding out (short). Best bet would be to open up the door panel andinspect the speaker and wiresfor any visible problem. Check the connector andcheck for clearance (make sure nothing else is touching the speaker causing a short). If it all checks out the problem may be at the amplifier. Do the same and check for issues.
