'99 W/ Bad motor
I just purchased a '99 v70 n/a with a bad motor. After looking here I guess I bought it from Bruno937. He thinks the oil pump went bad but I can't find where this is a problem with these cars. The motor is definately seized I tried turning the crank with 1/2" breaker bar and it wouldn't budge. I was originaly going to put the motor from my '96 850 in it but aparently the '99 is a vvt engine so that's out. The junk yard here as a 2000 motor for $1,000 with 80k miles. I'm going to pull the motor and investigate further as it has to come out anyways. Any recomendations on what to look for that commonly goes bad that would cause the motor to seize?(Ran out of oil maybe) He said it went bad while he was driving so I wouldn't suspect the starter. Does anyone know the interchange information on the transmission in the '99 FWD?

While oil pump failure is not common, it does happen. You will learn lots by pulling the old engine out and apart. I'm replacing an engine an '850 that the owner spun two rod bearings after running with low oil pressure for a long time. He ruined the crank, too, but the head looks good. I found a used engine w/ 125k for $250 from a recycler in Lynn, MA.
From what I know the '99 and '00 share the same engine, that is N/A and N/A; turbo and turbo.

Thanks,
the car is very low on oil, so I suspect It probably was oil failure. I think I found a complete motor from a '99 for $500 here with 125k on it. These motors seem a little sparse since there's only a couple years that interchange. I'm thinking it'll be easier and cheaper just to buy that than try using the parts from the old motor since I'm still going to need a short block even if there is no head damage. And regardless of mileage I'm doing the oil pan gaskets, all oil seals, water pump, timing belt, timing pulleys, tranny seals.
I can get the tranny from the same car for $300. I think I might do it. It's got a few less miles, and my V70 has a trailer hitch which looks like it's been used.

They tell me only the '99 v70 interchanges with the '99 v70 motor. I think the tranny is more years. I got a motor and tranny for $750 from local junkyard. Couldn't pass up the tranny for $175. Like I say mine was used for towing at some point, and looks like they had tranny fluid changed by a shop about 30k miles ago which to me means it likely was giving problems. Looks like I have project for this week.

Well just got the old motor out and apart. I had to break loose all the bearing caps to get the motor to turn so I could access the flywheel to torque converter bolts as the new motor didn't come with a flywheel. After opening it up I don't believe the oil pump went bad. This motor has sooooooo much sludge and hardened oil in it, it was acually clogging the oil pickup screen. I've never seen a motor this bad. Something bad happened to this motor.
