Default ABS Communication eBrakedown

2001 V70 Base, not Turbo, FWD, P2 Chassis (first yr). Error code P1500, Manufacture Vehicle Speed Control, idol control and Aux inputs error. Description is best recollection from discussion and notes with mechanic.
Fault Trace Communication error ABS 0070.0095.CEM-1A5F.
ABS controller (2nd bone yard unit) and pump on vehicle.

Dim Lights on the dash until clicking headlight controller to left, then back to right.
Cruise control is displayed on digital dash when selected, but cannot activate cruise control.
Odometer not working.
Sluggish acceleration periodically, within first few minutes of driving.
Digital read out sometimes stays in R when in D until driving a few minutes.

I really enjoy my Volvo wagon purchased 2 years ago with very few troubles until recently. I drive a lot for work in addition to hauling gear for music and family. I don’t want to give up on it, even with the current problems, I’m driving it with hope something more specific will happen to solve the mystery of the ABS Communication eBreakdown.

2 months ago ABS failure lights came on and I took the V70 to a local import specialist. They determined that the Pump and possibly Controller were bad. We got a bone yard replacement unit controller and pump that matched the original on the car. It was installed, but the ABS/STC failure lights on the dash were still on. The car was delivered to a Volvo dealer who has Volvo software and hardware equipment to clear codes. Volvo Dealer said the bone yard controller was bad. We sent a second unit. Dealer said it was bad too. Dealer installed a Remanufacture unit on, but couldn’t clear the communication error codes, Fault Trace Communication error ABS 0070.0095.CEM-1A5F. I was told that a wiring issue was likely to blame, but it would take an unknown amount of hours to troubleshoot the cause. Heck, it could even be a rodent chewing on some wires. I was also told that the Swedish Support Team had never seen the codes regarding my situation. The Dealer was unable to provide a resolution to the case. They seemed lost for answers and even suggestions moving forward. I've learned a lot about the situation in the past month, but don't have it solved yet.

On a side note: While at the Dealer my ebrake was activated (they swear nobody touched it) and needs replaced b/c several broken parts.
I asked the Dealer to total my bill and retrieved the V70. My comfort level with them is low, very low, as low as low can be.

As it runs today, it could be the main computer is going bad. 1999 and newer require a Dealer to reprogram. I can buy a replacement for less than $500, or I’ve checked with a company (AES Modules) who will bench test it for about $135 and ship it back. Total repair is about $550 for the computer. If it is a wiring issue like the Network Cables under the seat, that would be the quickest fix.

A good friend of mine and owner of several Volvos, has been helping me through code diagnosis, various parts websites, forums and jargon around Volvos. I really like my V70 and feel great about the Volvo enthusiast community. It’s easy to see why these vehicles are so popular after driving one for 2 years. Any suggestions/insight, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Lenen

Default reply from midwest modules

1. No cruise control, as the ABS module controls that.

2. Sluggish acceleration because the transmission gets it's speed signal from the ABS module. Faulty signal=limp mode.

Your cluster acting strange, you could have a bad DIMM module, or you could have a bad CEM causing the ABS issue along with the other electrical issues.

CEM is not to be confused with ECM. CEM=Central electronic module, your car is networked together, this module allows the others to communicate. The ECM is another name for the main computer.

Is your car AWD, FWD? Do you have traction control?

When you sent "Them" the two junkyard modules, who was it...the dealer or the independent? Did they give you codes? Do you know the pump is indeed bad, or just what they told you?

Default 2nd reply from midwest modules

I don't know.

You can test a pump without any special equipment, all you need is a multimeter. I've done it more than a few times.

The CEM-1A5F Communication with ABS control module Signal missing code is essentially saying that there is no communication with the ABS module. There's only one ABS module on the car. As far as the dimm and cem, there's no real way for you to test them...they have to be read just like anything else on the car.

P1500 is a speed sensor code, which would usually pop up when the system is getting an odd reading from one of the wheel sensors.

You could have a voltage issue somewhere causing these problems also. It's hard to say. I'd find it hard to believe that the dealer would install a known good module, then get a p1500 and not follow up on it to see what is causing it. Testing a pump is something they teach you in a high school level electronics class. You're testing the pump motor to see if it's up to spec, not relying entirely on a computer to tell you to throw parts at it.

You may be better off finding a different independent in your area, ask around on some different forums for suggestions on who to contact. Things like this happen, and anybody who has run into the same problem more than once should know what to do.
