Default Advice 1998 V70R

Found a nice 1998 Blue V70R in California, What are some of the major issues that R's have I should look at before I get serious with the purchase?

From everything I have read the V70R was THE top of the line Volvo made in 98. I think they are known to have some problems with the AWD, but they did not make an R that year w/o AWD so you have no choice if getting the R. I heard it has the most comfortable seats and that awesome stereo system they put in the C70 coupe. I have a 98 V70 GLT and it's been a very good car. Is it the real dark blue or the medium blue? I really like the lighter color blue more than the real dark, almost Navy Blue.

Be sure to get the service records. There is also some question about how close to a 99 model this might be. I've had problems finding information that directly referes to a 98 V70R. I recent bought one and it has not been a good car yet but I'm working on it. I don't blame the car, it was an abused vehicle and I didn't do my homework. The ABS/TRAC is broken, computer is being fixed now. Wiring was messed with to the point I'll have to have Volvo fix it. I further suspect the anti-theft system may be disabled. Lots of electronics, lots to go wrong. A good one with service history would be a good deal though.

The car is a real nice light blue that's what caught my eye but the guy who's selling it I don't think he doesn't know what he has. I think he just thinks it's a regular V70. I'm testing the waters on price to see if he will sell cheaper than the book says. Service records thats GOOD advice. My heart is really set on 850R or a Yellow T5R. Thanks

I did get my ABS/TRAC computer repaired and finally am driving the car a bit. I can't really wail it since the upper touque rod busing is fully trash, but, that being said it is a quick little wagon. My primary need is for winter driving, I drive an old Mazda 929 in the summer and an even older Mercedes 300d in non-snow winter. The Volvo is going to a very good indy next week for a through and I mean THROUGH go thru and should be as good as any well maintained 98 after I'm done. I am finding the car has the potential of becoming my Mazda replacement but it will need to prove itself for the next three years before I'm ready to commit.

The yellow T5R was only made in 95, and there was less than 1,000 of them imported to the US. I found a couple of them when I was looking last year, but they were beat up. If you can find an 850 R in any color other than Black or Red you found a car that is hard to find. Personally I never wanted the AWD so that kept me away from the V70 R. My 98 V70 is the low pressure turbo. I wish I could have found a T5, but couldn't at the time I bought mine two years ago. When my 94 850 Turbo blew then engine last summer, I would not have anything except an 850 R. I found a 96 that's was an orangeish-red color, but wife put her foot down and would not let me buy it (sort of). Had something to do with clashing with burgundy in the garage, my age and the Dukes of Hazard. When my daughter agreed with her, I let it go. That's when I bought the white one. It's fast, and I always liked white Volvo's. My very first one was an 84 White 760 Turbo Diesel.
