Advice on 98-99 V70s
I am going to look at two V70s tomorrow, both priced at about $2,800 US. Here's the basic:
Car 1 - Second owner who purchased it CPO. Has 100,000 miles and an automatic transmission. All service records available since owner purchased it in 2001. Known issues: One window which won't go down and one door which won't open from inside the car (need to rool down window and reach outside car.) Has lived most of its life in metropolitan area so I assume those 100,000 miles are city miles.
Car 2 - From a dealer. 144,000 miles with a manual transmission. No nothing about the background of this car.
This car would be for my 16 year old daughter and perhaps my 14 year old son some day. Would expect to keep it until "the wheels fall off".
I'm interested in long term maintenance costs and reliability. Don't want a turbo as it is just another thing to repair. Plus, a 16 year old doesn't a turbo.
Questions...
1. Any strong opinions whether car 1 is a better deal than car 2?
2. What specific items should I look for when I go see these cars?
Thanks,
T

You didn't say which is the '98 and which is the '99...
My understanding is that Volvo went to an Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) in '99 MY and the system was problematic (especially the first year '99).
So I would go with the '98, other things being equal.
Either way, make sure you have a competent Volvo tech do a complete pre-purchase inspection before you buy. Will likely cost you $100 or so but could easily save you thousands!
Good Luck!

Purchased Today
I looked at both cars on Sunday. I REALLY wanted the manual transmission, but what a wreck. I won't even both listing all the things wrong with that car.
The automatic is now mine and my daughter loves it. Really hard to imagine that I could've done better for $2,800 given the fact that I have the receipts for all the work the previous owner has had done. The car drives well and passed both safety and emissions inspection with no problems. Off to get title and plates tomorrow.
Maybe the daughter will end up driving the Pacifica......
