Default Air Pump Woes

Okay, I managed to replace the SAS valve. Now I'm working on the air pump itself. The old one I removed was waterlogged (as expected). I got a used one on eBay and installed it just now. Before I attached the electrical connections I hooked up my circuit tester instead. Then I pulled out the relay and jumped it to make sure that I was getting 12V to the air pump, and sure enough, I am getting 12V at the connector. Then I plugged in the air pump, jumped the relay again, and NOTHING!! ARGH!!! What did I do wrong?

Did you test the pump itself before installing?

I hooked it directly to the battery and nothing happened (besides a bit of arcing). I thought maybe it needed the relay. Could the polarity be backwards?

I never tried to swap the wires but I would think motor would run either way maybe used motor bad. That's why I asked if you tested before installing.

Okay, I removed the air pump and tested it again by connecting it directly to the battery. This time, I noticed that about 5-7 seconds after I make the connection, I hear a tiny little click coming inside the air pump that sounds like a relay. Then I hear it again when I disconnect the battery. I'm not hurting anything by hooking it directly to the battery, am I? What might that click be?

NO not hurting anything.
Not sure exactly what the click is but the air pump should be running.
