Hi. I have a question about the auto trans downshifting while slowing down/stopping.

Before I took the intake system apart and cleaned it, the transmission would disengage completely while stopping, BUT the car would die out because it was gasping for air.

Now that the intake is cleaned and the car is idling properly, it seems like when I slow down, the transmission downshifts from gear to gear until it stops.

The thing that changed when I cleaned the intake is that while slowing down or stopping, the transmission would seem to disengage fine, but then the idle would pop back up again enough to re-engage the transmission and keep it engaged until stopped, which I think is why it's happening. It seems like the computer was probably running with improper readings from the intake system for so long, it's still running rich and causing the idle to come back up after the transmission disengages.

Once stopped (and in park) it's perfectly fine (after the cleaning).

How long will it take the computer to re-learn everything now that the intake system is clean? Do I have to disconnect the battery for a day or two so it can wipe the computer? I tried it for a few hours nad that didn't do it, but I'm not sure if hte computer on this car has a capacitor or battery on the computer that stores the settings, if it's an EEPROM, etc.

The shifting , etc. is silky smooth and the trans fluid is clean, almost looks like it's just been changed.

You might have a neutral control not working properly.
That can easily be fixed with the Dealer downloading software to disable the function.
The cost should be around $30.00 for the software and between .50 and 1 hour labor.

 

Thanks. Is that something they are aware of where I can just ask for and they would know of? Is it supposed to do that? It doesn't bother me at all. If anything, it actually makes the drivetrain more responsive. I'm assuming if it's supposed to do that, that is the reason why? It just makes breaking a little ackward.

 

When you slow down the computer puts the tranny into neutral. I have never like the function from day one. When you sit at a light and slightly take your foot off the pedal does the car kind of lunge like in and out of gear? And sometimes it takes a second to go into gear after letting off the brake and hitting the gas?

I see cars that need the function diasbled all the time.

Just ask them to disable the neutral control.

Actually it doesn't do this at all. The more I drive it the less it happens. When I'm at a light it shifts fine and accelerates without any of those symptoms you described, although I know what you are talking about. I think I may already have the upgrade you speak of and I'm just using the wrong terminology like JRL says. When I slow down, it will shift from 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - stop instead of all of the automatics I have ever driven where it does switch to neutral. That's what I'm used to. I'm not used to the way the Volvo trans does it. I just didn't know if that was normal. If it is, it seems like a better way of doing it.

I have a 2001 V70 FWD non-turbo. I apoligize for me not stating what I have. I'm used to everybody knowing on the other forum. I'm still getting adjusted.

You should know by now that most 01 trannies will fail at some point

 

I dont think at any point your car should be down shifting for you. Take it to the shop, unless you want to wait for an answer and do the repair yourself.

 

My mileage is 66k. I think tech understands what I'm talking about, and it seems to be working itself out. My low/high idling problem has/had something to do with it, but that's all but worked itself out after cleaning the intake system and driving it for a few days.

It looks like the transmission already had work done on it. I can tell it's been taken apart already. Hopefully the more I drive it the idle will go back to where it's supposed to be and the transmission won't feel like it should always be engaged. It wasn't doing that when the idle was low. The intake system is now clean and spotless and the more I drive it, the more smooth the idle becomes. I think the computer is relearning everything since the MAF sensor and throttle body were so dirty. It would explain why the car was gasping for air, not to mention the air filter being dirty.

 

If the Nuetral control has been disabled then the car will no longer be in neutral when you are at a stop.
The software makes it like any other tranny out there.

But if you don't feel any of what I described then it might already be disabled.
If the Dealer runs your Vin it might show up. But if they connect Vida it will also tell them if it has been done.

 

It does not do what you described so I believe it has already been disabled. I already called a dealer and they told me what was done including the new software, etc but didn't say anything about this. I'll go by your advice and assume it has been done since it seems ok. Thanks!!
