This is probably one for Tech to answer:

Just did the B4 servo cover replacement on my 2002 V70 T5 with the AW55 5-speed auto. I was having a delay into drive, with occasional issues from 3rd-4th. Found the tech bulletin for it, my tranny was on the list of ones with bad servo covers. Took mine off and sure enough, it has fallen apart inside. I ordered a replacement and installed it today. I read in the instructions in the Volvo bulletin that an adaptation cycle is required afterwards. Obviously I don't have the cable for my Vadis, so I can't set that up. Is this really required? I still had a delay into drive at first, but after a few trips today it's lessening, and I no longer have issues with shifts, although they are much firmer now. I did do the 2-3, 3-4, 4-3, 3-2 shifting like is recommended to remove any air introduced to the system during replacement.

Is adaptation really necessary?

 

It should eventually relearn by itself. It will re adapt to your driving.

 

Great, thanks. I was assuming that, but I wanted to be sure. I actually got pulled over last night doing the 2-3,3-4,4-3,3-2. Apparently it sounded like I was speeding, but oddly enough I had the old parts and the instruction in the car, he was cool with it, but did measure my tint and mention that at 14% it's well above the legal limit in MN. I think he was expecting to see some young kid rodding around in a Volvo.
