Bought My First Volvo
Hi all,
Looking for 1st service recommendations. I've just bought a 1998 V70R AWD Turbo. It has 127,000 miles on it; I have no clue as to services performed. The car does look like it was cared for and the engine compartment is clean. I have a local indy who specializes in the marque. I want to draw up a list of maintenance items to address before I begin using the car as my 100 mile a day commuter. Other than the expected oil change, tranny/transfer case fluid change and probably a brake flush what should I have done to the car? What does the "R" signify on this car? Does this engine use a timing belt and when should it be changed?
Advice greatly appreciated.

Now as far as I know, there won't be any service records with the car. If the car was serviced by Volvo, would I be able to go to any Volvo dealership with the VIN number and would they have records of any major service perfomed by Volvo? The timing belt is my biggest worry as is any Turbo related issues. If I can't confirm the service, I'll just have to have it done to be safe.
Thanks Much.

RE: Bought My First Volvo
Being a little technical myself, what would I look for to determine that the belt may or may not have been changed? I've done timing belts on my multiple Mazdas and a Subaru. I also work on two old Mercedes and my Jaguar. I'm not a professional wrench but can find my way around. Does the belt show obvious signs of overuse like chunking and frayed edges etc? Should this engine have the hydraulic tensioner or mechanical? Is the belt difficult to change for someone like me (I'm pretty patient around my cars, treat them like a touchy wife). Are there any decent full service manuals for this car even shop manuals? I'm no fan of electronics but do have a nice OBDII setup on one of my laptops. I want to have fun with this car and not have it turn into an incredibly expensive headache.
Thanks for the info.

Pull the cover and inspect the Belt. It starts cracking if it is old. They also start to look like hard plastic. If it looks smooth and rubbery then most likely it was done.
For the tensioner it could be either depending on the production date. Early should be hydrolic and the later will be mechanical.
You should be able to handle it no problem.
For the shop manuals I have heard haynes and chilton both make them but not to sure how good they are.
I have always had Dealer info.
