Default RE: brake pads

Reviving an old thread - my '03 V70 2.4T was recently in for 45K service - dealer told me that the front pads were ready for replacement. I opted not to go with the Volvo pads becasue of their extraordinary dust problem and had an independent install the Akebono "Euro" pads - preliminary report (based on only one days's driving) - I can't discern any difference in feel or brake performance and there is no squeal as of now. There appears to be some kind of a non-metallic shim on the back of the Akebono pads and they were liberally coated with glop before installation. I'm hoping that this is a predictor of future performance (when I installed an after-market pad on my E320 Mercedes, the squeal was immediate and particulary evident at low braking effort - i.e. as I released the brakes in coming to a stop)

The Akebono pads are chamfered as described above.

If anything changes, I'll post my observations.

Three weeks into the experiment - stopping is fine, no noise and the front wheels are cleaner than the rears which are still on the original pads.
