Buying a V70, a good or bad idea?
Although it may seem silly to ask on a Volvo forum, I am wondering if it is a good idea to buy a Volvo V70. I found a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 Automatic with 91K miles on it. It is a clean car but I doubt any major maintenance has been done recently. In other words as soon as I buy it I would do the water pump and timing belt.
My main concern is are these cars known to be reliable? Also what are common problems with this vehicle?
I absolutely love the car, I just don't want something that is known for blowing the motor or transmission this early in it's life. Should I wait for a newer year if reliability is a concern?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Volvo's in general are great cars to rack up the miles on however the '01 is the early Ford days and they have a lot of tranny problems.
I always tell people to read reviews on www.cars.com. Personally I woud stay clear of the '01 & '02 Volvo's. Most people like the pre '99 and post '02 cars. However, if you're not mechaniclly inclined I'd stay post '03.

Thank you! According to the reviews of the 2001 it looks like you have possibly saved me several grand in repairs. I'm looking for a 2003 or newer car now but is there any engines or transmissions I should stear clear of? Like is the T5 less or more reliable than the other motors? And is it better to go automatic or manual for reliability?
My reverse went out a couple months ago...not even gonna try to fix it..246,000 and I beat the **** out of it everyday...she's a good car just gotta watch where you park. Btw reverse is a luxury not a necessity lol
