A/C problem
Another question, if I may? Is the fan right behind the radiator the one that works exclusively with the A/C ? Is there a chance that it might be bad? I checked it when the A/C was off and it remained off. When I t urned the A/C on, the fan went on.....
If you look at the vacuum lines that attach to the passenger area of the cowl, you will find the one that runs the AC vacuum controls. If you are not familiar I suggest that you get help locating that line. It typically has a check valve in it too. Make sure that the check valve stays in the same orientation or you will not get any vacuum when you are done.
The fan that is right behind the radiator serves a dual purpose. It cools the engine when the temperature reaches a set point and it also pulls air across the condenser when the AC pressures are high.
It is normal for it to go off when you turn off the AC.

Thanks again, Tony! Looks like I will be seeing my Volvo mechanic in CA. He was factory trained and worked on the old reliable ones like mine!! The name of the shop is Mission Motors in El Sobrante, CA. Hopefully the Bay Area will be a bit cooler....
