A/C Repair
One thing to add...
The actual transistor on the blower resistor (an MJ802 or NTE181 last time I checked on my S40) is around $3 at online electronics vendors like Mouser.com If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could save yourself $130 by just replacing the transistor yourself.
Although I didn't wait when my Cabin Fan Resistor went out - and picked one up from the dealership - I have bought a couple of MJ802s and will DIY the repair next time.
Datapoint: I have a 98 V70 and 01 S40. Component part numbers may be different on your vehicle.

So how do I find out the part number for the transistor of the blower resistor? Also, I read on some website and it said that I should disconnect the battery first and have my radio code ready. Where do I get my radio code and what for? Sorry for all the questions, I'm a newbie at this.
Thanks
Thanks
Hi Guys,
Just ran across this post about a/c repair. I have a problem with mine. My ac blows cold air but my fan does not stay running. I have electronic climate control. I usually leave it on 72 or so on automatic. The fan will normally ramp up cool the cabin off and then cycle on and off as needed to maintain temp. But now the fan might ramp up but then slow down and even shut off. I need to help on how to determine if it is the resistor or the blower motor. Any help would be very much greatly accepted. This just started in the last few days and living here in Phoenix, AZ it is running over 100 daily so it is needed.
Thanks Bo
ps. I also have an evaporative leak, when shutting off the car I will get a whining out of the front area passenger side. It seems to be comming from the accumulator but I do not think that is possible, any help?

I appreciate your input so much. The photos help more in knowing the exact procedure you did. Many thanks for having it here. It's perfect as i'm currently repairing my A/C but not yet completed.
You do a fine job on these articles, I've got a 2000 v70, needs some a/c work, and your outstanding efforts on this site are going to make my life a lot easier, Thanks much, and while I'm at it can you tell me what type of Pag oil you used, and how can I find out what make compressor I have, my Vida/Vadis says there where two makes used in my model and year, your help would be greatly appreciated, and again, how do you get all these little things highlighted
I would love to do the same when I do any repair work, to help others out as you have. Thanks for all.

Yes,it really helps a lot to be in this discussion. The last time i got my a/c problem,i check out details here and got help from the members. With the guided instructions i was able to fix my A/C not spending bucks of money.
The highlighting is very cool, in general you have set a new standard for others to imitate truly a great job and thanks in advance of my A/C work.
I have an A/C question to pose in a new thread but this was such a good A/C posting someone may have seen my problem.
My electric fan at the radiator doesn't turn on and cool the evaporator when the car is stationary. I observed the refrigerant pressure climbs until the dangerous level when the hi pressure switch shuts off the compressor clutch. Eventually when the engine coolant gets hot the electric radiator fan turns on which in turn lowers the refrigerant pressure and the A/C clutch comes back on the pressure lowers the cabin cools until the engine is satisfied shutting off the fan. This cycle repeats.
I can't find the electrical a link between the A/C and the evaporator fan.
On most cars when the A/C is on the fan is on how does Volvo control the evaporator fan during A/C?

2004 S40 AC will come on and cool good. 15min. later, stops cooling. wait as much as 20 min. still nodt cooling. turn AC off wait 5 min. turn on, AC works good for 15min to 1hr. works good then starts stops AGAIN> Open for ideas. Have serviced car ac for a long time; however I do not know the controls and location on my car. Makes me feel a little {dumb} and on my car. Love this car. 30mpg T5 engine great.
Great help for the A/C. I'm changing the orifice because of no cooling. Charged up and pump runs but no flow.
That air line that covers the orifice line is a trick- you pull off the connection to the ECU box with the hose attached, then move it out of the way and the hose pulls out. I first tried to detach it from the firewall. Didn't work. Too rigid. So I noticed in the photo that only half was removed including the part on the ECU box. Big help. Thanks. Now I have to go buy a wrench to fit the big nut. 23mm I think.

WOW.... I can't believe how simple this was! Having no heat/air for almost a year has been a royal pain in the @#*%. I went to the local pull-a-part, with nothing more than the 2 torx screwdrivers in hand. I replaced both pieces in the parking lot, and drove home comfortably!! You have no idea how much money you saved me. Well, yeah I guess you do... Thank you so much! I will be doing the heater core next week- also thanks to your post. You are truly a car god! Thank you again...
