Default Check Engine and service light

My service light came on about a week ago. Today my Check engine light came on. Car is a 1999 V70 non-turbo. The oil and air filter were both changed about 2 weeks prior to the service light coming on. Car has about 80K miles and i have not noticed any decline in performance. Any ideas what the problem can be. Thinking maybe O2 sensor or cat conv? How do you reset the service light/CEL? I am used to working on Hondas where you can read the CEL code yourself....can this be done on a Volvo? Or do they sell code scanners for the V70 at auto part stores?

It is a sign of your transmission switch has gone bad. It may needs replacement.

First and foremost there is no way to tell it is your transmission without pulling the DTC's. Second the service light is simply a mileage based reminder to have a scheduled maintenance service done. It is set at to come on 7500 miles from the point at which it was last reset. 3rd as far as the check engine light a generic OBDII scanner will be able to pull codes but to be able to repair and accuractly diagnose you will need to find an indepenant Volvo specialist that has the VCT2000. If you need a referral for a shop in your area let me know and I will find one for you.

The check engine light could be anything from the gas cap not being tightened all the way to a bad etm.It really needs to be checked out by a specialized volvo shop. And they might not even be able to fix it because when you replace certain parts on your car they need software to be downloaded in order to activate them.Yes you can reset the service light by turning ignition to position 1 then hold the odometer reset in while holding turn to position 2 wait for the service light to flash 3 times then release. It will be reset.

Yes, it will work. Sometimes it may take 10 seconds for the light to flash. Then turn key back off.
