Codes P0410 and P0172
I keep getting these two codes on my 98 V70. I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced the MAF Sensor. From where I look for codes it says the following:
P0172 - System Too Rich
P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
The car runs perfectly fine, it just always has the CEL on and I get these codes constantly. It's been doing it for quite some time. I rarely drive the car and my wife just ignores the CEL and Service Light.

RE: Codes P0410 and P0172
First thing in the morning after it has been sitting all night. Start it up and listen for a Hairdryer noise under the L/F.
It is mounted to the body under the battery tray. It is not the cuise motor but lower than that.
The Air guide will have to be off to see it.

RE: Codes P0410 and P0172
The car has not been run for probably eight hours and I went out and started it. I don't think I heard anything down below the air filter box. There is about a 1 inch diameter hose coming out the front of the air filter box and it goes down in front of the box. Is that going to the air pump?

RE: Codes P0410 and P0172
Update:P-0172= Volvo code 231/232 Long term fuel trim Idling Upper limit.
Possible sources: Mass flow sensor bad,Low fuel pressure,Air leak,Faulty Pulsation Dampner,Faulty sensor signals.
Did you also have a P0440?
If so then you need to check the Evap system as well.
I would start looking for a Vaccum leak first. TipCheck the end of the intake by the Power steering pump and make sure the Elbow doesn't have a hole in it. That is if you have one.
Then I would check fuel pressure. Then make the Mass flow the last item.
Hope this helps.

RE: Codes P0410 and P0172
I only get the P0410 not P0440 and I don't get it all the time. It gets P0172 all the time though I was just getting ready to replace the Air Pump. Should I replace the Check Valve too? Volvospeed.com Bay 13 say to change the check valve at the same time as the air pump, but I'm not sure it's necessary.
My wife is saying the car is running real rough at times and feels like it about to stall out then it will run ok. I drove it for 14 hours last weekend and never felt this so it must have just started happening. I was going to change the Fuel Filter since it has not been changed at least since I bought the car. It has 108,000 miles on it and I got it at 72,000. Figure it can't hurt to change it and from what she said it sound like a fuel problem.
Anything else I should check?

RE: Codes P0410 and P0172
Fuel filter sounds good.
The valve is easy to check/remove. 2 screws hold it on then you need to add Vaccum and make sure it moves.
If the Valve moves it is good.
Not sure if that will cause the Long term fuel trim code as well.
Have you checked for vaccum leaks good yet?

Hi Tech, are you talking about the valve with the flat top torwards the back side of the engine. Has a small line and two hoses coming off it? If I remove this valve, apply vacuum to the thing and the valve moves it is OK? Just replace the Air pump? I ask beacuse I have this job coming up and that valve is EXPENSIVE!!
Thanks.
Thanks.
