ok, well as the title says im kinda new here lol... any who, im planning on buying a 98 or 99... MAYBE a 00 v70 and i was looking at the stickies and saw some lil things here and there that seem to be a problem with most european cars, of course the dreaded timing belt is always the big scare... but what i did notice is that in the sticky it said it cost about 700-800... if this is tru thats a relief... cuz that means two things (hopefully)
1. its not the 2-3k to get it done like it is with my Audi
2. if its that cheap, then that means its an easy fix and i can just do it myself since im pretty car savy..
the other question i have, is when buying or looking for a v70, what are some things i should look for off the bat, and if it passes those tests and i do buy, what should i look out for or get ready to look into repairing soon? thanks again for any help![Smile](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)

This is not a really busy forum so it might take a little time to get a reply.
The V70's do come in a 5-speed but they are very rare.
Check for oil leaks. Also with the car running and warm pull the dipstick out of the tube and see if it smokes like a train.
Try to find a 98 as well they are the best.
You should be able to handle the t-belt as well.

I looked at XC 70's before we got our V70. The XC's get worse gas mileage. They sit higher and have larger wheels. A different kind of ride. I found the V70 to have better handling characteristics. My understanding is the the XC 70's AWD weren't really great until '03. They went thought several design changes prior to that.
Not to start a flame war but I prefer the 2003 and on V70's as well just based on my own reliability research although the '98's had pretty good results too.
PS- I was an Audi driver as well. My last was an '95 S6. Great cars but expensive to maintain.

yes, well the audi definately isnt cheap haha
but the 98 im most likely getting is from a dealership with i think 196k on it.. so would i be wise to purchase the extended warranty? or should i steer clear from the car? like how many miles can these cars/motors handle before we have to wave bye bye

As far as the warranty is concerned, it all depends on what it covers, what it doesn't, if there are certain requirements to keep the warranty valid (maint. at THEIR dealer is a popular one), and any deductible. Usually those warranties are more of a maintenance contract than they are a warranty.
